Arkansaw, WI
The unincorporated community of Arkansaw, WI, is located in Pepin County, about three miles west of Durand along U.S. Route 10. Situated within the eastern portion of the town of Waterville, Arkansaw covers a small land area of less than one square mile, home to a population of fewer than 1000 people.
Arkansaw was founded in the early 1850s along Arkansaw Creek, which was named in honor of the Arkansas River. The community initially grew around lumbering after the first local sawmill opened in 1852. Most early development centered around three dams built on the creek within a mile of each other, until all three were wiped out by a flood in 1907. The area today is home to Arkansaw Creek Park, Pepin County Fairgrounds, and three churches: Catholic, United Methodist, and Community of Christ..
